Teens learn about drought at science of water camp

Thirty students from Tehama County are heading off to camp at Shasta College in Red Bluff to get a hands-on education in water science and drought. The day camp is coordinated by the College OPTIONS UC Davis GEAR UP program, which helps students prepare to enter and succeed in college.

â€œWater is a limited resource, and we’ll be discussing the implications of that throughout the week,” said Karissa Morehouse, director of UC Davis’ GEAR UP program in Tehama County.

Graduates from the 8th grade at Maywood Middle School in Corning and Vista Preparatory Academy in Red Bluff begin camp on June 23. They’ll work directly with wastewater treatment experts, an environmental education and watershed expert, an irrigation systems specialist, and a chemist to gain an understanding of the complex issue that is California’s water.  At the end of the week together the students will produce a public awareness campaign poster on a water related issue of their choice to be displayed in the community.

The goal of the program is to provide students a unique educational summer opportunity that enhances their knowledge in the sciences and connects them to viable career fields while learning about a fundamental natural resource, water. The week will include a field trip to Whiskeytown Lake and Shasta Dam, which sits at only 44 percent of water capacity due to the drought. This program was developed in partnership with the Shasta College Tehama Campus, Tehama County Department of Education, Tehama County Resource Conservation District, and the Job Training Center to create a curriculum which combines local knowledge, resources, and career experts to reinforce science, literacy, technology, and math skills.
