Tehama County Cal Maritime & USS Hornet Field Trip
On Thursday, January 22nd, 40 freshmen students from Corning Union High School and Red Bluff High School attended a College OPTIONS GEAR UP field trip to Cal Maritime and the USS Hornet. The goal of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds to complete high school and enroll in, and complete their postsecondary education choice. This trip was geared to help these freshmen really start to narrow down what they are looking for in their postsecondary options, and also to show them that there are lots of things to see outside of Tehama County.
During the Cal Maritime portion of the trip, these students got to listen to an admissions presentation, take an extensive tour of both the campus and main ship at the campus, and had the opportunity to eat like a college student in the universities dining commons. The purpose of the trip was to give those students who do not want the traditional college experience the opportunity to see what other options are out there.
During the USS Maritime portion of this trip, the group had another extensive tour and learned about the history of the ship. The students were really engaged in the tours and asked a lot of questions of the tour guides. Many of the students on the trip are considering joining a branch of the armed services in order to help pay for college. The students also talked about how much this part of the trip made them think about patriotism.
